Hila-Hilata | 8in x 10in | Hahnemuhle Photo Rag | 2022

Hila-hilata is an adaptation of the movement Hila-bana Street Art. The developing project became internationally and nationally recognized because of localized concept of the red string. The indigenous marker acts as a catalyst for engaging the locality with an interconnected street art as a learning tool to weave the community’s mindset on revitalizing one’s cultural identity.

Ammin Acha-ur is a cultural advocate from Butbut, Tinglayan, Kalinga and part of the new generation of “mambabatok” (tattoo practitioner).Ammin catalyzed “batok” as a way to spread her indigeneity and envisions a future wherein her patrons shall be the bearer of our indigenous systems and practices.

Hila-Hilata ideates Ammin as an individual of doubt subjected to multiple realities. Thus, an occurence of separations from the self, anomalies that are caused by entanglements of the current system. The red thread exists unilaterally for a purpose: to serve as our visual guide towards self empowerment, cultural awareness, and freedom from negative externalities.
